How plant medicine therapy is emerging as a transformative option for millions struggling with treatment-resistant conditions. Let’s dive in.
We're living through a mental health emergency that's been building for years and you can’t tell me you haven’t noticed it. More friends casually taking prescription medications. More phone usage at the dinner tables at restaurants. More scrolling less peace. More people around us obsess over political issues instead of the buried hurt in their own hearts.
In 2024, over 60 million American adults experienced mental illness (Mental Health America), and yet nearly half of them didn't receive any treatment (Mental Health America). More than 13 million adults reported serious thoughts of suicide, and the number of individuals who died by suicide in 2022 was the highest ever recorded in U.S. history (Mental Health America) and in continue to go up today in 2026. This is staggering.
Many have tried traditional approaches that haven't worked and a growing number are asking: What else is out there?
The answer may lie in an unexpected convergence of ancient healing practices and cutting-edge neuroscience. It sounds funny to try to beat “new” issues with “old” wisdom, and yet study after study are showing the powerful benefits of psychedelics and plant medicines.
Nearly 1 in 10 U.S. adults have experienced a mental health crisis in the past year (Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health) - moments when thoughts, feelings, or behaviors became too much to handle and required prompt assistance. Young adults ages 18-29 reported the highest crisis rates at 15.1%, and those experiencing housing instability faced crisis rates of 37.9% (Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health).
But here's what makes this crisis particularly troubling: access to effective treatment has never been more challenging.
Nearly 6 million adults with a mental illness are uninsured Mental Health America. 42% of Americans cite cost as the primary barrier to seeking mental health treatment Beaming Health. And even when people can afford care, over 122 million Americans live in Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas Beaming Health, meaning there simply aren't enough providers to meet demand.
I may add one note as well, even when treatment is accessible, it serves as on-going cost acting like a bandaid rather than a curing treatment.
Perhaps most concerning is what happens when traditional treatments fail. Among those receiving medication treatment for major depression, 30.9% develop treatment-resistant depression (TRD) PubMed, meaning their condition doesn't respond to at least two different antidepressant trials.
Treatment-resistant depression accounts for 47.2% of the total economic burden of major depressive disorder, despite representing less than a third of patients PubMed. These individuals cycle through medication after medication, therapy after therapy, hoping something will finally break through the fog.
The current medical system is failing these people.
This reality has forced researchers, clinicians, and patients themselves to ask difficult questions: What else do we have to work with? What are we missing?
Could humanity's oldest healing traditions hold answers that modern medicine is only now beginning to understand?
Plant medicine is far from new. Indigenous cultures across the Americas have worked with sacred plants like Ayahuasca and Psilocybin (magic mushrooms) for thousands of years, using them for inner healing and spiritual expansion. What is new is the scientific community's willingness to study these substances with an open mind.
Over the past two decades, institutions like Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Imperial College London, and numerous other prestigious research centers have dedicated significant resources to understanding how plant medicines work at a neurological level. The results have challenged fundamental assumptions about psychiatric treatment.
Multiple studies have shown Psilocybin Therapy can produce rapid and lasting reductions in depression and anxiety - including in treatment-resistant cases where conventional medications have failed. Research has demonstrated effectiveness in treating PTSD, addiction to substances like alcohol and tobacco, and even existential distress in patients facing terminal illness.
Bryan Johnson, a famous biohacker, did the unthinkable and even live streamed his experience taking a heroic dose of magic mushrooms - recording all metrics along the way!
The results will not be instant - however the most fascinating result is actually what's happening in the brain itself.

Here's where it gets mind-blowing: plant medicine appears to promote neurogenesis - meaning the actual formation of new neurons and neural pathways in your brain. Imagine your brain as a city with established roads and highways that route traffic in predictable patterns. Over time, these routes become so automatic that changing them feels nearly impossible, like solid concrete tunnels. Trauma, depression, and addiction create their own highways in form of looping negative thoughts, avoidance behaviors, and self-destructive habits, and these solidify making them difficult to treat with our current systems.
Plant medicines, under the right therapeutic conditions, don't just temporarily alter these patterns. They help create entirely new roads. They facilitate communication between parts of the brain that do not typically exchange information, allowing for lasting neurological reorganization and healing. You get a second chance at your brain's blueprint.
Research has shown that a single, properly supported plant medicine session can create meaningful shifts that last months or even years. We see it in our participants every week, and every Alumni Integration Call, the new sparks for life, the new outlooks, the shifts in perspectives. It’s truly remarkable.
Is Ayahuasca legal?
The answer is: it depends where you are.
In certain jurisdictions (including Mexico, Costa Rica, and Portugal) plant medicine ceremonies are decriminalized making their consumption not against the law, safety. In the United States at the federal level the substance DMT/Ayahuasca is classified as illegal and therefore not safe or advised to be consumed in the USA.
Plant medicines are not for recreational use, so there is a small part of me that understands the laws. The benefits show up specifically within the context of intention, preparation, professional guidance, and integration support. Set + setting are as important as the medicine itself.
Legit Ayahuasca Retreats and other Plant Medicines create lasting change in retreat settings with experienced facilitators, medical screening, psychological preparation, and ongoing integration support.
If you're interested yet uncertain about what this all involves, that's a very healthy approach. Ayahuasca isn't for everyone, and it’s important to understand what you’re signing up for.
A legitimate plant medicine retreat, such as those offered through organizations such as Behold Retreats and Resonance Costa Rica, follow a breakdown:
Pre-retreat Preparation: Both medical and psychological screening (some conditions and current medications are contraindications and can not be taken together with Ayahuasca), discovery calls and prep materials about what to expect, coaching calls to set intentions and address concerns.
The Retreat: Always held in beautiful, peaceful locations where plant medicine is legal. Behold in particular only allows for small group sizes up to 11 people per group and these experiences are guided by trained facilitators with deep knowledge of both the medicines and the therapeutic process. Throughout the 7 Days you will experience 2-3 medicine ceremonies, guided movements, yoga classes, delicious vegan food - all activities to nourish your mind, body, and soul, while you are going through his shift.
Integration support: The most important phase. The insights and experiences from plant medicine need to be processed, understood, and translated into actual life changes. Quality programs provide post-retreat therapy sessions, community support, and resources to help you make sense of what emerged and apply it meaningfully. Rushing back to your old life isn’t what you came here for, so ensuring it’s a life-lasting experience is really the key factor here.
The experience itself will be profound, challenging, beautiful, and sometimes difficult. You may be confronted by painful memories, experience deep emotional release, gain unexpected insights about patterns you've been stuck in, or feel a renewed sense of connection to yourself and the world around you. Ayahuasca allows the space for you to be able to handle and process everything which comes your way.
As Danny Yepez, CEO of Behold Retreats, explains: "We encourage people to do their own research on plant medicine, to ask themselves whether they may benefit, and to look within and be guided by professionals to make their own educated decision. For those who are ready to open the door to this inner exploration, Behold Retreats are here to start the conversation."
Plant medicine isn't the right path for everyone. It requires physical and mental preparation, the ability to take time away for a retreat, financial resources, and most importantly, a genuine readiness to do deep personal work.
Before making any decisions, educate yourself thoroughly. Watch documentaries like the Goop Lab psychedelics episode or Michael Pollan's How to Change Your Mind on Netflix. Even high performers such as Aaron Rodgers (who actually attended a Behold retreat) showcased his experience on Netflix’s Enigma.
Despite growing awareness and resources, serious mental health problems continue to escalate Mental Health America. The traditional infrastructure wasn't built for our current needs.
The combination of traditional wisdom, modern scientific validation, and a cultural moment where millions are seeking deeper healing creates this unique opportunity.
