Psychedelics and the Pineal Gland: Unlocking Spiritual Awakening

Begin Your Journey

Clients come to us because they’re interested in psychedelics.

But they’re not REALLY interested in psychedelics.

They’re interested in entering an altered state to expand their consciousness and to facilitate personal transformation. They’re interested in spiritual growth, in healing trauma, finding inner peace, experiencing their inherent divinity, and connecting with their true purpose.

An Ayahuasca retreat or 5-MeO-DMT retreat is simply the means to an end - a powerful tool to accelerate the process. Seldom is participating in a retreat a goal in of itself.

Therefore, it’s important that we understand what’s required around a retreat for us to get the most benefit from the experience. It’s not easy to take a week off for a retreat in Costa Rica or Mexico.

Most people overlook the importance of:

1.     A deep understanding of what they’re trying to achieve

2.     Identifying their mental and emotional blind spots

3.     Tools to navigate these powerful experiences

4.     Detoxifying the body and decalcification of the pineal gland

In this article, we’re going to talk about #4 - in particular the role of the pineal gland and its importance in relation to psychedelic experiences and spiritual growth.

If you’d like to understand more about #1-3, check out our Webinar.

What is the pineal gland?

The pineal gland is a tiny organ at the center of the brain, often described as “the seat of the soul” or the “third eye”. It is the gateway to your higher self.

The pineal gland processes serotonin, regulates the production of melatonin, and therefore the circadian rhythm – your sleep cycle. There is also some scientific evidence that the pineal gland secretes endogenous DMT, though there are still some differences in understanding as to whether or not this occurs in the human brain.

So, suffice to say that if you’re interested in spiritual growth and your overall health, the pineal gland is of fundamental importance.

    Broader spiritual understanding

While the science related the pineal gland is still rudimentary, many cultures and ancient wisdom traditions from around the world relate the so-called third eye to:

    • Clarity
    • Imagination
    • Intuition
    • Spiritual perception
    • Connection to the universe

Many people claim that once they’ve opened their third eye, they’re more able to receive spiritual guidance, and it is also believed to be at the core of phenomena as yet unrecognized by science such as telepathy, clairvoyance, and astral projection.

The pineal gland and spiritual awakening

Unfortunately, most people’s pineal glands are effectively closed. Why, you might ask?

The truth is, they’re calcified as a result of pesticides in their diet and fluoride in the water. This might sound like some conspiracy theory woo-woo, so here’s coverage on the topic from WebMD to alleviate healthy skepticism you may have.

Inherent to “waking up” and spiritual growth is the activation and development of your pineal gland.

A few recommendations to heal pineal calcification:

Reduce or remove fluoride. Tap water and toothpaste are the two most common sources

Reduce exposure to EMF by removing and turning off unnecessary gadgets in the bedroom. Research has shown EMF may affect melatonin secretion

Make sure your eyes get plenty of exposure to daylight

    Get high quality sleep

Food and supplements reported to support detoxification and opening of the pineal gland:

    • raw cacao
    • goji berries
    • garlic
    • lemon
    • watermelon
    • star anise
    • honey
    • coconut oil
    • hemp seeds
    • ginseng
    • Vitamin D3

Meditate daily, a guided activation can help:

Attend a psychedelic retreat – almost certain to activate and begin the process of decalcification of your pineal gland.

    What role can psychedelics play?

A psychedelic drug (like Ayahuasca, DMT, LSD, or Psilocybin / magic mushrooms) activates the pineal gland and can provide temporary access to a higher level of human consciousness, or even cosmic consciousness.

Through the psychedelic experience, we’re able to go beyond the human mind, often referred to as a mystical experience, ego dissolution, or even an ego death experience.

This experience is when we are able to truly recognize our spiritual selves – as being bigger than our minds, our bodies, and this lifetime.

However, the pineal gland and psychedelics are but pieces of the puzzle when it comes to elevating human consciousness. Emotions and regulating the mind are equally important to personal and spiritual development. Find out more by watching our Webinar.

It’s also important to remember that while psychedelic effects are powerful to reach a higher consciousness, all of these experiences are possible without psychedelics, though it may required decades of meditation and mindfulness practice.

More broadly, there is quite a bit of research going on in relation to the pineal gland, DMT production (and DMT level). Other resources that may be of interest:

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can psychedelics actually activate the pineal gland?

Growing research suggests Ayahuasca, Psilocybin, and 5-MeO-DMT engage the pineal gland and influence the production of DMT, a compound that occurs naturally inside the human body. Clinical evidence is still emerging, and spiritual lineages that have worked with these medicines for generations describe the same phenomenon in their own language. What is clear is that guests often report profound shifts in perception and self-awareness.

Which psychedelic is most linked to pineal activation?

5-MeO-DMT is the most directly associated with the pineal gland in both scientific literature and spiritual tradition, since the pineal is believed to produce DMT naturally. Ayahuasca and Psilocybin create similar states of expanded awareness through different neurochemical pathways.

Do you need a retreat to benefit from this work?

A retreat is not a requirement, but for most people the depth of a guided container makes the work safer, more integrated, and more transformative. Attempting this alone carries real risks and often leaves people without the support to make sense of what they experience.
