10 Reasons People Join Plant Medicine Retreats

Plant medicine is now widely sought after as modern day science has confirmed its numerous capabilities to heal. From affairs of the mind such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, addiction, and an overall increase in mood level, plant medicine has become one of the greatest tools for mental progress.

It heals a wide variety of wounds from the personal, to trans-generational and even collective traumas, but this healing is merely a by-product of the wisdom that cloaks the individual who chooses this path. Every experience these ceremonies provide play into human evolution, a deeper understanding of the self and the surrounding world. Healing is a part of  the journey to personal power, self mastery, and eventually self transcendence.

If you have felt the pull of plant medicine or feel awed by the stories, there is probably a reason why. Maybe there is nothing for you to solve or figure out, and this is a necessary step on the path of self development.  Below are ten of the countless reasons why people would join a plant medicine retreat, and the process of becoming a more conscious radiant being.

1. Overcoming the Small Self

The smaller self is often referred to as the ego. Spiritual teacher Ram Dass said “Behind everyone's learned behaviors and odd eccentricities lurks a soul, ready to make contact if only coaxed out through a crack in the ego.” Plant medicine creates this small crack in the ego, enough to let the light of the soul pour through. The smaller self,  the ego protects itself through fear, and in higher states of consciousness fear, and the need to protect is lost.

When we can transcend the smaller self, the heavy negativity that the ego has seems light, and the worries and doubts that occupy so much thought then become almost frivolous. We realize the things we have been anxiety stricken or grief ridden about do not matter so much in the grander scheme of things.

Transcending the smaller self means entering divinity, an energetic field beyond human form, race, gender, or nationality. The smaller self feels the need to protect its identifications, to confirm its identity, but the soul knows it is much greater than the roles the ego plays.  All the problems we face because of these identifications actually create separation between humans, so overcoming the smaller self is entering unity.

2. Full Potential

Many of the super successful people and the high rollers who have accomplished everything on the material plane and still feel dissatisfied, then enter the world of spirit. They have grabbed everything externally, the Ivy League school, the high paying job, the beautiful partner, but still there is an existential vacuum within them that nothing can fill.

This is because it cannot be filled from the outside. Plant medicine connects us to our inherent power because we have the ability to clearly see the inner landscape. The culture conditions us to focus on the exterior, but the interior of our lives is where we can access our greatest potential and then there is no need to demand or chase things in the outer world. The potential is accessed within the gates of the self.

When you can clearly see the nature of your mind, your thought patterns, your behavioral system, this awareness can empower you to move through the world with ease. Accessing your full potential is more than making money or accomplishing, it is your ability to connect to your divine purpose.

3. Increasing Happiness

Beyond the treatment of depression and anxiety, plant medicine creates new neural pathways and creative ways of thinking that substantially increase levels of happiness. Studies done by Jon Hopkins show that this increase in mood is substantial, lasting weeks.

Psilocybin in particular works with the feel good receptors of the brain, also known as serotonin. This can help to rid people of headaches, provide good sleep, and regulate the nervous system. Ayahuasca has worked to combat treatment resistant depression, and the aspect of using it in a spiritual container in a ritualized context is particularly healing. Patients after have a higher ability to connect to joy.

On the mind level, many mental illusions we hold about life and ourselves are broken and we can see through the veil of life. Self judgment, doubts, and inner hate, are confronted with the awareness of love.

4. Bettering Interpersonal Relationships

Many plant medicine retreats induce mystical experiences, and one of the most common and re-ocurring experience is the feeling of oneness. In this state, there is no separation between you and a flower, or you and your co-worker, or you and a perceived enemy. You are all made up of the same atoms and are all a fragment of consciousness coming from the same source.

This prevalent feeling of interconnection is so strong that it breaks down the boundaries between people. Relationships become healthier because you see the humanness in every action, the sense of yourself in the other, and that if you were to walk that path in a person's shoes you would probably do the same things they do. Empathy is a byproduct of this oneness, and so is compassion.

After ceremonies many people let go of old grudges, and learn to forgive and mend past relationships that used to be a wound in their lives. You can find the ability to understand those who may have caused you pain, and to go beyond the polarizing feeling of hatred, whether that be for an ex boyfriend or a political figure. It is all us.

5. Re-focus

Doing a plant medicine retreat is a complete declutter of the mind and a re caliber. All the trivialities that eat you up in daily living, do not hold the same importance as they did before. And when the muddiness of the mind clears, there is a focus on what is important in life. We then prioritize life around the essentials.

Life is no longer about having more, but about simplification. There is no longer an urge to over complicate things but to focus on what truly nurtures the soul. This can involve purposeful work, being of service,  loving people with integrity, and telling the truth not only to others, but to ourselves.

A best friend of mine took her clinically depressed sister to an ayahuasca retreat and her sister stopped doing heroin cold turkey. Yes, plant medicine is known for healing, but this was a cognizant shift for her. She saw that what she had focused her life around was not important, and it was focusing solely on her pain.

The ego likes pain, it strengthens itself around the feelings of shame or betrayal or self indulgent hurt. She re focused her mind instead of the pain, on possibility, what her life could be like if she dropped her attachment to suffering.

Less than a year later she became a teacher and met her now husband who she has a family with. This is due to the shift she had in ceremony that spread outwards into her life. Plant medicine will show you what it is you need, and then it is up to you to shape your life around, to re prioritize and focus on the crucial.

6. The Beauty of Ritual

In our modern western world we have lost the art of ritual, of doing something with intention and putting supreme care into action to create a sacred space. The beauty of a retreat is the ritual of the ceremony. There are designated actions to curate self care and a balanced ecosystem within the body and mind. There is a proper diet to be followed, meditations before ceremony, yoga, and a daily ritual that you can bring with you into everyday life.

Many times after plant medicine journeys people carve time for a morning ritual for their spiritual development. This differs person to person but can often include gratitude journaling, meditation, yoga asana, and breath work. This sets the tone for the rest of the day and allows a state of mindfulness to bloom forth. Plant medicine retreats embody the higher state of ritualized intention and act as a catalyzing force to higher consciousness.

7. Know Thyself

Plant medicine retreats require preparation and proper integration work, usually involving a life coach and healer to assist you in unraveling outdated concepts of self which include limiting beliefs, unconscious habits, and negative self talk.

When we can understand ourselves better we hurt ourselves less. Instead of traditional therapy and going deeper into stories of the mind, plant medicine retreats go straight to the root, which is beyond the self indulgent narratives and unresolved traumas. You get a taste of your true nature, your Bodhi essence that is always peaceful and ever present, just under all the artificialities.

When we connect to our true nature, we can see our truest desires past the conditioning and cultural codes that were handed to us. Then we connect to our higher purpose. Knowing yourself means carving a life that is aligned with your highest wants and aligned with your unique capabilities.

8. Higher Purpose

Why are we here on Earth? What do you really want to do with your time here? How can you take your unique gifts and talents and give them back to the world? These existential questions plague many of us. We want to know why we are here and our higher self knows it involves more than making money or procreating.

Our purpose cannot be sourced from what we were told to be. Our purpose is beyond the societal roles we have been given, but something deeper and more profound. Many people are coerced into living lives that are not their own, and it is because they are not aligned with their purpose that this happens. Knowing what to dedicate time and energy to is essential to a wholesome well lived life.

Plant medicine clears the dust of the mind to go down into its riches, and this knowing part speaks. We learn our vocation, we viscerally feel what is good for us and what throws us off alignment.

The medicine allows a supreme clarity, for visions and epiphanies that point towards your purpose. This can take place in visions or omens, through a method of intuition and feeling. After the ceremony ends, it is part of the integration work to commit yourself to that purpose and to live in truth.

9. Spirit

For many people that have suffered from the death of a beloved one, or experienced extreme loss, plant medicine retreats are nourishing to the soul because it is a connection to spirit. Spirit is beyond the body and the mind, it is a quantum field of energy. In this space, you can meet other entities, souls who have left their bodies, and connect to the eternal. Ayahuasca in particular, connects people to their lineage, the presence of your ancestry and lineage that still lives within your DNA, and can even  reconnect you with someone who has passed on to the other side.

Matter cannot be created nor destroyed it just changes form, and in these altered states of consciousness it is reassuring to know that those we love can never truly leave us. They are here and present, though they have left their bodies. The energy remains, and entering the ceremony we are more attuned to these subtle energies. It is normal to grieve during a loss, but there is a solace in knowing that you are never really alone.

10. Mysticality

Plant medicine allows you to enter a state that would take over ten years of meditating alone in a cave to reach. The plants have access to a wisdom that our minds cannot comprehend.  This is the world of mysticality that poets like Rumi spoke of, the space beyond wrongdoing and right doing, where duality breaks and we enter a non dual state.

There is a supreme love that overtakes us, old emotions release and we do not need to understand what is going on but simply experience it. It is beyond words, and often the most difficult to translate verbally because language cannot do it justice. It is beyond words and concepts. It is a state of being that is so grand, you are everything and nothing, you are the microcosm and the macrocosm.

It is difficult to be connected to this realm of reality in urbanization, in the hustle, in the rat race of getting by. Retreats create an environment for higher intelligence to communicate. In a safe and secure container with a real healer, the mystic realm is inevitable because the ego can be surrendered. The soul has room to speak and it does not need to scream to be heard.
